Summary of Position
The mandate of a School Counsellor is to assist and guide students, staff and families to build capacity for working through personal, social or psychological problems and difficulties. This can occur preventatively, (e.g., capacity building, psychoeducational) or remedially (e.g., one-to-one counselling, group counselling).
Accountabilities
The Right Person
The successful candidate will provide counselling to students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Experience working with children and adolescents will be an asset. The successful individual will offer individual and group counselling, having the support of a team to provide immediate response to situations such as suicide attempts, accidental deaths and other critical situations that may arise at a school. The successful candidate may need to be able to use multiple platforms through technology and web conferencing to provide services if needed. Well-developed interpersonal skills, and the ability to take initiative and work independently, with a positive and supportive attitude are necessary for the role.
Qualifications
Preference will be given to applicants that have knowledge in areas including, but not limited to, depression and anxiety, drug and alcohol addictions, family of origin, behavioural interventions, relationships, sexual abuse and parenting skills. As well, candidates should have an awareness of other agencies that would be available for referrals and support. The successful candidate will be self-motivated and comfortable working in a school setting. A degree in Social Work, Psychology or a related science field such as Drug and Alcohol Counselling is required.
This position involves travel to schools within the school division and a valid driver’s license and dependable vehicle is required.
